schedule:
1 semester course / 2017 Q3-4
supervisors:
Peter KNOBLAUCH, Karin STEINER
Every failure or mistake is an unquestionable evidence of human will. When an object breaks, this inner motivation of the user that bulges through the cracks of a broken object.
This swelling is a mixture of the user's motivation and
the qualities of the object.
In case of such events, with the right ammount of self reflection, one can learn valuable lessons about not just the object or the context itself but about one’s personality as well.
Learning from our mistakes.
It is not a coincidence that children tend to fail as much as they can (or allowed to). They know it by instict that these events are the best way to gain the most information about their surrounding objects, environments and not the least about themselves.
The overtuned and functionalist objects of our time let no space for failure, nor mistakes. As a result, they are blocking us from getting information about the world, and ourselves. They enstrange us from each other.
Nowadays, middle schools—as they are becoming more aware of the true nature of children—are trying to create classrooms that can adapt to this behaviour.
They are flexible, modular spaces with a large variety of seatings. My research showed that there is no viable working surface system that would be suitable for such an environment. My project tries to answer this need.
The connections of the three parts were designed to allow the children a fast and playful switch from one function to another.
None of the three parts are perfect in what they are supposed to be. The frame could only be turned into a table with two other boards, the legs of the small stool are held in place with ropes and the board will always waggle as the joints are not placed in the middle. These mistakes create space for the children to excercise their curious, experimental nature.
