The main topic of the course was enstrangement, regarding our relationship with objects and the surrounding environment. The task was to create objects that can ease the consumer’s ambivalent tension caused by the illusions of designcapitalism. Our team chose the fear of pushing public buttons, especially capacitive ones. The reasons behind this frustration are the millions of bacteria transferred by them, the possibility of small electric sparks, and the annoying fact that they cannot be activated in gloves.
The idea was to create a button for buttons.
A button for buttons.
Creating a secondary surface, which can be fixed over any button, the consumer does not have to fear no bacteria, electric sparks or any sensitivity issues no more. The button is made from silicon and thanks to it’s suction cups, it can stick onto any even surface. The gesture and the tactile sensations of pushing a button are provided by a second finger which even can be copied from your very own. To reflect on the aforementioned enstrangement and to emphasize the strong critical notion of our object, we have inserted pieces of hair into it’s uppper surface. As all the real fears has been elimanted, only disgust stays, generated by the object itself.
